Background. In Ukrainian linguistics, the studies of names in cities and towns randomly take into account the issues of anthroponym as a social sign, mostly paying attention to anthroponymic fashion or to national and religious factors, state and political coordinates. There is also no lexicographic analysis of such names.

Purpose. The aim of the paper is to suggest a new lexicographic description of Lviv names in the first half of the twentieth century. The stated purpose implies the following tasks: to illuminate the linguistic information and sociolinguistic parameters of the frequency dictionary “The names of Lviv city in the first half of the twentieth century” and to outline the practical value of the Dictionary for sociolinguistics courses.

Results. The lexicographic processing of Lviv names has made it possible to combine linguistic and sociolinguistic information in the dictionary article by selecting metric birth books as sources of research. Such metric records, in addition to anthroponymic data, contain social characteristics of the names, statistical parameters and chronological indications to the period of using names.

The linguistic data of the Dictionary include: a range of male and female names, among which are the names of traditional anthroposystems and foreign languages; name variants, including spelling, church, and colloquial forms; Latin name equivalents; indicators of the total name frequency, which allows identifying the most frequent and unique names; name frequency indicators according to the named persons (daughter, mother, godmother, midwife; son, father, godfather); name frequency in the first, second, third, and fourth positions in the complex name.

Sociolinguistic information helped to reveal the connection of names with the state and political context of the city, which affected the spread of national factors in the names of the townspeople; to outline the essential features of the names of the Greek Catholic Church followers, in particular the tendency to combine traditional and foreign anthroponymic units; to identify the differences in the range of names of two generations, namely newborns and parents. Thus, the Dictionary identifies correlative links of name – state and political context, name – religion, name – social group, name – age.

These correlations and tools for highlighting them in the material of the Dictionary can be used in teaching the disciplines of the sociolinguistic cycle.

Key words: social nature of names, names, lexicography, metric books, Lviv.
