АМЕРИКАНОЗНАВСТВО В УКРАЇНІ: ДОСВІД ЛЬВІВСЬКОГО НАЦІОНАЛЬНОГО УНІВЕРСИТЕТУ ІМЕНІ ІВАНА ФРАНКА

Анотація

Простежено розвиток американознавчих студій на прикладі Львівського національного університету імені Івана Франка, розглянуто особливості становлення та консолідації магістерської американознавчої спеціалізації, здійснено огляд ключових здобутків американознавства в університеті імені Івана Франка, подано аналіз основних інституційних досягнень і викликів, з’ясовано роль вишу у розвитку американознавства в Україні, окреслено подальші перспективи його розвитку.

Studying and understanding the United States has always been seen in Ukraine as an inalienable part of the universal quest for knowledge, as a valuable source of information and experience for Ukraine’s democratization and modernization efforts, as a pathway to comprehend a wider context of global development. Despite its apparent potential, the current state of teaching on the USA in Ukrainian universities is far from satisfactory. There are attempts to organize efforts around producing, promoting and disseminating knowledge of the United States within Ukrainian academia as well. The Ivan Franko University of Lviv has always been committed to supporting U.S.-oriented teaching activities and, in 2011, officially introduced a U.S.-focused specialization at the MA level with the aim of providing a more updated, comprehensive, coherent and multiperspectival understanding of the United States. The structure and content of the program underwent several serious modifications and the U.S. Studies program is still a work-in-progress. However, the approach adopted by Ivan Franko University might serve as a viable solution at this stage. The U.S.-focused specialization noticeably contributed to further strengthening and developing the long-term sustainability of the U.S. Studies. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv already successfully held two multidisciplinary conferences on the USA that has already established as an important event for Ukrainian scholars.  The last one was organized by a newly established United States Studies Center. The aspiring goal is for the Ivan Franko University to position itself as a hub for organizational and curricular practices and resources on U.S. Studies in Ukraine, to become a forum for the dialogue and exchange of views, and to serve as a point of reference for other higher education institutions in this field.
