RM5Si3 intermetallic compounds (R = a heavy rare earth metal or yttrium, M = Ni or Co) were synthesized by arc melting. X-ray phase and
structure analyses were used to determine the composition of the samples. The
crystal structure was refined for some of the compounds and the elemental
composition of the compounds was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy.
X-ray emission spectral studies of the Si Kβ1,x-, Si LII,III-, M Kβ2,5-, and M Lα-lines
were used to establish the valence band structure, and electrical and magnetic
properties were investigated.
The spectra of the RNi5Si3 (R = Y(A), Gd(B),
Tb(C), Dy(D)) compounds shown on a unified energy
scale (full line Si Kb1,х,
dashed line Si LII,III, dash-dotted line Ni Kβ2,5, dotted line Ni La1,2).
