The isothermal
section at 600°C of the phase diagram of the ternary system Gd–Ge–Sb was
constructed in the whole concentration range, based on X-ray powder diffraction
and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The formation of a continuous solid
solution Gd5Ge3-xSbx (x =
0-3, structure type Mn5Si3, Pearson symbol hP16, space group P63/mcm, a
= 8.5702(8)-8.9745(6),
c = 6.4305(5)-6.3431(4) Å) and
limited solid solutions based on the binary compounds Gd11Ge10
(6 at.% Sb), Gd5Ge4 (10 at.% Sb), GdSb
(6 at.% Ge), and Gd4Sb3 (28 at.% Ge) was established. Three
ternary compounds were found in the system at 600°C: Gd6Ge4.3Sb11.7
(own structure type, oI46, Immm, a = 4.1420(4), b =
10.4411(9), c = 26.228(2) Å), Gd2Ge3.28Sb0.65
(structure type Gd2Ge3.38Bi0.42, oS32, Cmcm, a = 4.0198(2), b = 30.3729(18), c
= 4.1340(2) Å), and Gd5Ge2.0-0.9Sb2.0-3.1
(structure type Eu5As4, oS36, Cmce,
a = 12.241(7), b = 8.025(3),
c = 8.039(3) Å for Gd5Ge0.90(12)Sb3.10(12)).
