The new ternary intermetallic
compound Gd2Ge3.84(4)Sn0.92(4) was synthesized and its crystal
structure was determined by X-ray powder diffraction (structure type Nd2Ge3.55Sn1.24,
Pearson symbol oS40,
space group Cmcm, a = 4.0434(6),
b = 35.284(6), c = 4.1724(6) Å, Z = 4). The structure type Nd2Ge3.55Sn1.24
contains triple slabs of trigonal prisms stacked as
in α‑ThSi2 and double square-mesh atom nets. It is a
member of the linear intergrowth structure series built up from segments of the
structure types AlB2, CaF2 and α-Po. The zigzag
chains of Ge atoms inside the central prism slab are
deficient and the disordered atom arrangement is modeled by two split sites.
