A detailed study of the Lu-Cu-Sn ternary system was performed in the composition range Cu–LuCu5–LuCuSn–Sn at 670 K. The crystal structure of two previously unknown stannides formed in this region was determined using X-ray powder diffraction. The Lu1.8Cu9.2Sn2.8 compound crystallizes in the Dy1.9Cu9.2Sn2.8 structure type (space group P63/mmc), whereas the Lu3Cu4Sn4 stannide belongs to the Tm3Cu4Sn4 structure type (space group C2/m). The formation of a substitutional solid solution LuCu5-xSnx up to 15 at.% Sn was observed.

A model of the crystal structure of the Lu3Cu4Sn4 compound (SG C2/m).
