The article is devoted to the analysis of the basic theories of studying stereotypes both in domestic and foreign authors. Author has developed a new conceptual framework targeting stereotypes among today’s Ukrainian migrant laborers. This conceptual model is based on socio-cultural approach. According to the socio-cultural approach theory, we analyze the stereotype as a socio-cultural phenomenon that is present simultaneously in three dimensions of social reality in the form of social institutions (family, education, religion, etc.), as labor migrants often contact their relatives and friends with whom information, experience and stereotypes are shared; also very often the formation of stereotypes is influenced by the education and religion of the migrant worker); social practices (public and cultural activity of migrant workers, their social participation in everyday life and communication with various ethnic and national groups, since migrant workers themselves are directly communicating with representatives of different national / ethnic groups); and cultural values (values attributed to various national practices, symbols and groups, socio-cultural tolerance, etc.). In this article we propose an author’s conception of the basic theoretical approaches to the concept of a stereotype. We proposed a comprehensive “theoretical canvas”, through which one can study stereotypes, drawing on the ideas of G. Zborovsky. In particular, on the basis of the analyzed material, the peculiarities of definition of the concept of “stereotype” in structural functionalism, phenomenology, ethnomethodology and socio-cultural direction are determined. The theoretical provisions of these approaches are not mutually contradictory; therefore we consider it appropriate to formulate a synthesized model for the study of stereotypes. In a further study, we will try to determine whether the culture of recipient countries affects migrant workers, and how this is reflected in the attitude of migrant workers to representatives of “Other” national / ethnic groups.
